Digital Badging & National Wood Flooring Association

The demand for skilled tradesmen has skyrocketed in recent years. As of May 2022, approximately 34.7 million people in the United States were employed in various trades, with significant growth projected for installation, maintenance, and repair jobs (5.1%). The wood flooring industry, in particular, continues to thrive, with the global wood flooring market expected to grow from USD 53.45 billion in 2024 to USD 67.49 billion in 2029, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 4.80%.
National Wood Flooring Association: Supporting Industry Growth
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) plays a pivotal role in fostering growth within the wood flooring industry. With a mission to “unify and strengthen the wood flooring community through technical standards, education, networking, and advocacy,” the NWFA has created innovative ways to support skilled trades.
What is Digital Badging?
As part of its efforts to stay ahead in a tech-driven world, the NWFA introduced digital badging through its NWFA University. Digital badges are modern, electronic versions of traditional certificates that recognize achievements, skills, and expertise. These micro-credentials are validated through a secure platform, making them highly reliable and shareable across professional networks and social media.
Since launching NWFA University, participation has soared. More than 12,000 digital badges have been issued, and an average of 60 courses are completed daily. By collaborating with Credly, a leading digital credentialing platform, NWFA ensures its certifications are credible and authenticated.
Digital badging not only enhances professional visibility but also helps connect skilled workers with employers, particularly in a younger, tech-savvy demographic.
Advanced Certifications: Taking Skills to the Next Level
NWFA now offers higher levels of certification, including Certified Craftsman and Certified Master Craftsman, giving professionals a clear pathway for career advancement. Since its inception in 2016, NWFAU has enabled over 14,000 learners to complete more than 173,000 courses, equipping tradespeople with the expertise needed to lead in their field.
Apprenticeship Program: Building Tomorrow’s Workforce
The NWFA Wood Flooring Specialist Apprenticeship Program, approved by the Federal Department of Labor, provides a structured career path for new tradespeople. This program benefits businesses and apprentices alike by offering:
- A curriculum for hands-on and online instruction.
- Employer funding opportunities.
- Tax credit eligibility (state-dependent).
- Increased productivity and employee retention.
Employers gain access to a highly skilled workforce, while apprentices earn while they learn, ensuring a mutually beneficial experience.
Empowering Women in the Flooring Industry
The Women in the Flooring Industry (WIFI) organization complements the NWFA’s efforts by fostering inclusivity in the trade. WIFI offers scholarships, mentorship programs, and professional development opportunities to attract, empower, and celebrate women in the flooring industry.
People at the Heart of the Industry
Both NWFA and WIFI emphasize the importance of community, education, and advocacy. These organizations recognize that people are the foundation of the wood flooring industry, building strong connections and fostering growth.
