These days, luxury vinyl plank flooring is a popular choice. It looks like wood and is strong and long-lasting. Vinyl plank flooring is easy to install, costs less, and is more comfortable than most hardwood floors.
Since LVP flooring is 100% waterproof, it's great for bathrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, and entryways where spills happen all the time. Daily wear and tear doesn’t bother it, and it can handle a lot of foot traffic. It's also simple to keep up because all that's needed is cleaning and sweeping, not refinishing.
Luxury vinyl planks can be laid horizontally or vertically or have a herringbone or diagonal pattern. The direction of the flooring changes the look and feel of the room. When considering which way vinyl plank flooring should run, there are a few factors you can consider to make your decision easier.
Adjoining Rooms
Generally, the room or rooms the vinyl plank flooring will be installed in will connect to other spaces. If you aren’t redoing the flooring in both areas, you want the transition between the two to look similar and smooth so the flooring doesn’t look mismatched. In this case, you might decide which direction to install vinyl plank flooring based on the direction the flooring in the adjoining room follows. Alternatively, selecting a new material that is an intentional esthetic contrast to the current flooring can be a nice look, especially if it compliments a tone(s) in the existing flooring.
Room Shape and Features
The room’s shape can help you determine how you want the flooring placed:
Narrow: If the room is narrow, like a hallway, the planks should run the room’s length. This will elongate the space.
Small: If you have the planks installed in a room you want to appear more spacious, running the planks parallel to the longest wall will achieve this. If you want the room to appear more expansive in the opposite direction, have the planks placed horizontally.
Angled: If the room has a lot of sharp angles, diagonal or herringbone patterns can help detract from them.
There may be a feature in the room that you wish to emphasize, such as a fireplace, art piece or antique desk. If you have the planks laid perpendicular to the feature, you create a natural focal point in the room. You can also have the planks mimic the direction of the room’s most used or main entrance. If installing the planks in the living room, have them placed perpendicular to the front door.
Look for patterns- Planks are usually put down either horizontally or vertically, but they can also be laid in a diagonal or herringbone design. In herringbone, two rows of lines next to each other have different slopes. Patterned floors with herringbone or zigzag lines stand out more than plain floors, but they might cost more to install.
Lay out some sample planks- Your professional might lay down some planks in the patterns or lines you want to see how they look before installation. Picture planks going in both ways, then look at them side by side to choose the one you like best.
