Are you renovating your home? Are you stumped when it comes to choosing the right wood flooring?
Did you know that it’s crucial to consider the hardness of wood when deciding which type of flooring is best for you?
“How can I determine the hardness of a wood”, you might be wondering?
With so many options, barking up the right tree can be unbe-leaf-ably challenging!
So today, as luck wood have it, we will explain the Janka Hardness Scale and how to use this information when shopping for the perfect hardwood floor!
What does it all mean?
The
Janka hardness test determines how resistant a wood sample is to wear and denting. It gauges the amount of force needed to partially insert an 11.28 millimeter (0.444 in) steel ball into a sample of wood. This process results in a 100 mm2 hemispherical depression. (Wikipedia, n.d.). The higher the value on the Janka wood hardness scale, the more resistant wood is to wear and denting. For example, if you compare two different species of wood, such as hickory and chestnut, the hickory species is more durable because it has a Janka wood hardness rating of
1820 while chestnut has a rating of
540. This rating helps wood floor installers indicate how difficult a particular type of wood will be to cut or nail during the installation process.
How should I choose?
Depending on the intended usage, every type of wood has a variety of qualities that can be particularly beneficial. Strength, density, durability, grain, color, even odor are all properties of wood that affect milling and manufacturing. When determining whether a wood species is acceptable for flooring, the Janka wood hardness scale has become an industry standard.
Given its 1290 Janka hardness rating, Red Oak has established itself as a standard by which other wood species are measured in relation to each other's relative hardness. Something with a higher Janka grade, like a White Oak, would be ideal for you if you're wanting to add wood flooring to a heavy traffic location, such a commercial space. The higher Janka rating, the harder the wood. You can be confident your wood flooring will last the test of time; guaran-treed for generations to come!
A lower Janka rating wood, such as American Walnut, can be a good choice for your wood flooring needs if you want to bring warmth and style to a room with less use, like your bedroom, where wear is less of an issue. Regardless of the Janka rating, all wood will ultimately deteriorate or get dented from impact and time. Selecting a wood flooring option with a better rating will increase the wood's lifespan.
